Jan's performances essentially come in three styles. These are TABLESIDE, WALKAROUND and PLATFORM. Any given show will fall into some combination of these categories.
"Tableside shows, as you'd expect, are those in a restaurant-like setting where I'll move from table to table, doing a few minutes of magic for each group."
"Walkaround is exactly that. Normally in a setting where people are standing in groups, I'll approach a group, do some magic and then move on. Sometimes this is called Mix & Mingle"
"A platform show is any show where I'm at the front of an audience in the more traditional sense. This might be anything from a parlour show in a private home to a stage in a hall or theatre."
Here are some examples of how the styles fit into real world bookings.
WEDDINGS
"Weddings are absolutely my favourite bookings. They'll often comprise a mix of Tableside and Walkaround. Walkaround is perfect for pre-reception drinks, when the guests are often standing in small groups whereas some Tableside magic during the formal reception meal (NOT during speeches, I promise) helps to create a perfect atmosphere. I always do something just for the happy couple too, after all - it's THEIR day."
PRIVATE DINNER PARTIES
"You might think that this would be a given for the Tableside style, but at a dinner party in someone's home, they often are more like a Platform show with the guests relaxing after the meal, and me facing them from the corner of the room."
CLUB DINNERS/SOCIALS
"These tend to be one thing or the other. If there is a sit down meal, then it's likely to be Tableside. Otherwise it's Walkaround. Very occasionally, I'll be asked for a Platform show for this kind of event, depending on the venue." |
